Russian regulatory authorities are appearing to be going after Binance – the world’s leading cryptocurrency exchange – as its domain is now within the list of blacklisted websites within the country. Recently on 24th Sept., Binance officially revealed on its Russian Telegram channel that Russian telecom regulator Roskomnadzor has listed the web-site to the register of platforms disseminating prohibited information.
In line with the official announcement, Binance has been placed within the list due to the distribution of information associated with the acquisition of digital assets like Bitcoin [BTC]. Gleb Kostarev, Binance’s head of operations for Russia and the CIS, added that the exchange revealed the news immediately after the exchange received a notification from Roskomnadzor.
Despite the domain being placed on the list of blacklisted websites, Russians can still access it with none additional tools sort of a VPN. However, at the reporting time, the URL is often found on the official register of the blacklisted sites of Roskomnadzor. Consistent with the report, the website was listed on 2nd June 2020, while the access to the web-site “is not limited.”
Within the official public announcement, Binance executives emphasized that they haven’t received any information regarding the restriction before 24th Sept., adding that:
“We weren’t previously notified of any claims by enforcement agencies, civil government services or courts before receiving the above notification. We’ve now engaged our legal counsels for further advice and would really like to assure all of our Russian users that there’ll be no disruption to their services within the interim which their funds are safe.”
As Binance’s website was purportedly blacklisted by Roskomnadzor earlier in June 2020, the action appears to be unrelated to Binance’s plans to launch its cryptocurrency debit card within Russia since the plans for it were announced slightly later, in the month of September this year.
Later in August, Roskomnadzor also blocked BestChange.ru, a leading cryptocurrency website in Russia that offers an aggregator service of about 400 native cryptocurrency exchange websites.
